Support the Warren Site

The Warren Historic Site was once the center of a thriving African American community outside of Poolesville, MD; with your help, we can make sure the remaining buildings and the history of this town are preserved for future generations.

When this project is completed, these three structures will present new programming focusing on local African American culture and history. Specifically, its founding by African Americans immediately after Emancipation in 1866 and the creation of a community which supported an offered safe harbor to residents through Reconstruction, Segregation, Jim Crow, and the Civil Rights eras. The Warren Historic Site will continue to be used for meetings, funerals, concerts, special events, homecoming, and as a community center. It will maintain regular hours for tours by visitors and school groups. The site will also join the Montgomery County Heritage Area’s African American Heritage Tour program which includes 17 other local historic sites.

But to get there, we need your help!

Phase Two Projects Include:

• The church vestibule windows and bell tower are urgent projects as the tower is structurally unsound and deterioration of the window frames has caused the glass in the windows to slip allowing water to enter the building. Until these items are repaired, the church can not be rented for events which generate much needed income. • The schoolhouse restoration is urgent as the east wall is damaged from slipping off the foundation and continues to sag. The windows in this wall need to be restored as they now allow water into the building and can not be opened or closed due to their fragile condition. • The Holding tanks will replace the original septic system which has failed and does not perc. As the site is used for programs and events a working waste system is required. Failure to fix these problems in the church and schoolhouse now will necessitate mold remediation or much more costly repairs in the future. Without these buildings, we do not have the historic context for the important historic stories offered by the Warren Site.
